“I first began practicing yoga as a way to strengthen my neck following a whiplash accident. What I discovered was that the practice changed how I looked at my whole life. To see how the more difficult, less comfortable postures correspond to the difficult people and situations in my life is a continual reminder that breathing and standing strong in my calm center is a fine prescription for anything that might come my way. Relaxation, both on and off the mat, is not only good for my physical well-being, but it gives me a framework for approaching life that enhances my overall wellness, including mind and spirit. The constant mental chatter which I entertain then becomes less important, and easier to lay aside. And I feel more connected to the Spirit within, which holds everything together. All these things contribute to a more balanced experience of the world, especially a world which I often feel powerless to change. The challenge then becomes not to change others, but to bring my own best self to each encounter with them. This has a way of effecting change, over time, but my goal is always to manage myself and focus on my own reactions in the midst of changing circumstances. Jenn's class gives me many new insights, and the periodic meditations she shares are gems for reflection and tend to shed light on the exact issues that I happen to be dealing with at the time! And as I am someone who really needs accountability to continue with my discipline, the weekly contact really works for me, as well as the benefit of having someone else lead me through the exercises. I appreciate the invitation for each of us to practice at our own "skill level" and not compare ourselves to anyone else around us. It's another good reminder for daily living, and accepting the nature of this present moment, without wishing to change it or escape it. Yoga is truly a way of life!” Wendy S. |
